传统活性污泥工艺原理
活性污泥法是当前应用为广泛的一种生物处理技术，活性污泥就是生物絮凝体，上面栖息、生活着大量的好氧微生物，这种微生物在氧分充足的环境下，以溶解型有机物为食料获得能量、不断生长，从而使废水得到净化。该方法主要用来处理低浓度的有机废水。
工艺特点：
1) 污泥产量大，通常占废水总量的0.5-1%，成分复杂，既含有大量的有机物，又含有害的重金属、病原微生物等，处理和处置费用高;
2) 脱氮除磷效果差，一般只有20-30%左右;
3) 为了避免池首端形成厌氧状态，不宜采用过高的有机负荷，因而池容较大，占地面积较大;运行管理操作复杂，管理水平要求高。

关键技术参数
比较重要的活性污泥法设计参数主要有：停留时间、混合液悬浮物浓度(MLSS)、污泥负荷(NS)、容积负荷(NV)、污泥龄、回流比等。其中作为经验参数的停留时间应用的历史为悠久，但往往具有不能确切描述进出水水质的特点。所以，按照相应的设计规范，应选择污泥负荷或容积负荷来作为控制参数进行设计，其余参数仅为常规的校核参数或中间参数;在国外，也有利用污泥龄作为控制参数加以设计的规则，其原理与负荷设计法类同。在系统的运行过程中，污泥龄、回流比、MLSS等参数具有相当重要的指导意义。
